Canva's AI features now cover almost the whole design process: you can describe a design in a chat and let Canva AI build it, generate images and video clips, write copy with Magic Write, resize a design into other formats, remove backgrounds and turn data into interactive content with Canva Code. Some of this is free. A lot of it isn't, or is capped.

This guide explains each Canva AI feature in plain English, which ones you can use on the free plan, how Canva's new AI "allowance" works, and whether Canva Pro is worth it for the AI alone. All plan details come from Canva's own pricing page and Canva AI page, checked October 2026.

Canva AI features at a glance

Canva now groups its AI under one name, Canva AI, and sorts the individual tools into three usage tiers: Standard, Premium and Ultra. Here's the map.

Tier Example tools (as listed by Canva) Free plan Pro plan
Standard AI Magic Formulas, Magic Write for SEO, Create an image with Canva AI Shares a pool of up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses Full access, subject to fair use
Premium AI Canva Code, generating designs, elements and videos, Style Match, Magic Layers, Magic Insights, Image to Video, AI ad creation with Canva Grow, Music and Sound Effect Generator, Form Generator Comes out of the same pool of up to 20 uses 10x more Premium AI than Free
Ultra AI Conversational design with Canva AI, high-quality video clips with Canva AI No access Up to 20 Ultra AI uses (used instead of Premium allowance)

Canva explains that Standard, Premium and Ultra tools draw from one shared AI allowance "at different rates," and that more complex tasks use more of it. So "20 uses" is a best case for simple tasks, not a guarantee.

A second group of classic tools (Magic Write, Magic Resize, Translate, Magic Eraser, Background Remover and others) sits outside that allowance. More on those below.

Canva AI: the conversational assistant

The headline feature is Canva AI itself, a chat-style creative partner inside Canva. You open it from the Canva homepage or the Canva AI button at the top left of the editor. According to Canva, you can:

  • Start with an idea: describe what you want by text or voice and watch a design appear.
  • Edit your way: keep chatting to refine it, or click in and edit elements yourself.
  • Generate elements: ask for an image, a chart or a headline and drop it into your design.
  • Stay on brand: Canva AI learns your brand's fonts, colors and rules.
  • Run web research: search for information and bring it straight into the design.
  • Connect your tools: pull context from connected apps to generate designs.
  • Schedule tasks: set Canva AI tasks to run later or on a recurring schedule.

Canva's FAQ says Canva AI "is available to everyone," with more usage and advanced features on paid plans. In the plan table, though, full conversational design is an Ultra AI feature, which the free plan doesn't include. In practice, free users can try parts of Canva AI, while extended back-and-forth design sessions are a paid-plan experience.

Generative tools: images, video, code and layouts

These are the "make something from nothing" features.

Create an image (Standard AI)

Type a prompt and Canva generates an image you can place in any design. Canva says it has launched its own image generation model, called Canva Craft. Because this is a Standard AI tool, free users can use it within their limited allowance, and Pro users get full access under fair use.

Generate designs, elements and videos (Premium AI)

Describe a social post, flyer or presentation and get an editable layout, or generate individual elements and short videos inside the editor. Canva also lists "high-quality video clips" as a separate Ultra AI feature for paid plans.

Magic Layers (Premium AI)

Canva describes this as turning AI designs "into editable layouts." Instead of a flat generated picture, you get separate layers you can move and edit, which is what makes AI output usable for real marketing work.

Canva Code (Premium AI)

Canva Code turns a prompt into interactive content, such as quizzes, classroom activities and data visuals. Canva pitches it for teachers ("interactive activities, quizzes") and for working with data.

Image to Video, Style Match and more

Other Premium AI tools on Canva's list: Image to Video (animate a still image), Style Match (match the look of an existing design in one click), Magic Insights, a Music and Sound Effect Generator, a Form Generator and AI ad creation through Canva Grow.

Classic Magic tools: editing, writing and resizing

These are the AI tools most people actually use every day. Canva lists them as "included based on your plan" and says they "don't count toward your shared monthly AI allowance," subject to fair use:

  • Magic Write: generate and rewrite copy inside your designs and docs.
  • Magic Resize: turn one design into other sizes, like an Instagram post into a story and a YouTube thumbnail.
  • Translate: translate the text in a design.
  • Magic Eraser, Magic Edit, Magic Expand, Magic Grab: remove objects, replace parts of a photo with a prompt, extend an image beyond its edges, or separate a subject so you can move it.
  • Background Remover (photo and video) and Photo Background Generator.
  • Magic Animate, Magic Morph, Magic Charts and Mockups.
  • Audio and video helpers: AI Voice, Highlights, Enhance Voice and Beat Sync.

Which of these does your plan include? Canva's Pro plan card names "AI tools (resize, translate, remove background, and more)" as a Pro upgrade, so don't plan your free workflow around Magic Resize or Background Remover. Beat Sync is a clear example of the split: Canva lists it as "Manual" on Free and "Automatic" on paid plans. Canva's feature comparison table on the pricing page shows the exact tick for each tool and plan.

What you get on Canva Free vs Pro

Here are the key AI-related differences from Canva's pricing page (yearly prices in US dollars, before tax):

Canva notes that K-12 schools and nonprofits can get most premium features for free through its education and nonprofit programs.

Is Canva Pro worth it for the AI features?

It depends on how often you design.

Stay on Free if: you make a few designs a month, mostly from templates, and only need occasional AI help. Twenty AI uses go quickly, but the templates and editor alone are strong.

Go Pro if: you post on social media several times a week, need the same design in many sizes, remove backgrounds regularly, or want to test AI video and Canva Code seriously. Magic Resize and Background Remover alone save real time for creators and small businesses.

Tip: Before upgrading, spend a week noting which AI features you actually reach for. If it's mostly resizing and background removal, Pro pays off. If it's occasional image generation, the free allowance may be enough.

If you sell digital products like planners, printables or templates, Canva is often the design half of the business. We walk through that in how to make digital products with ChatGPT and Canva. To get started, you can open Canva and try the AI tools on the free plan first.

How to use Canva AI features safely

  • Check AI images before you publish. Look for odd hands, warped text and logos that resemble real brands.
  • Review your privacy settings. Canva says it doesn't use your content to improve AI features unless that's consistent with your privacy controls, which you can change in Privacy Settings.
  • Read the terms if you sell designs. Canva says use of its AI is subject to its terms, Acceptable Use Policy and AI Product Terms.

FAQ

Are Canva AI features free?

Some are. The free plan includes up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses and Canva's editor, templates and basic tools. Ultra AI features, higher AI limits and Pro AI tools such as resize, translate and background removal need a paid plan.

What is the difference between Standard, Premium and Ultra AI in Canva?

They're usage tiers. Standard tools (like creating an image) use the least allowance, Premium tools (like Canva Code or Magic Layers) use more, and Ultra tools (like conversational design and high-quality video clips) use the most. All draw from one shared monthly allowance.

How much is Canva Pro?

Canva's pricing page lists Pro at US$144 per year for one person, before tax. A monthly option is also available on the same page.

What is Magic Studio in Canva?

Magic Studio is the name many tutorials use for Canva's collection of AI tools. Canva's own AI page now presents them under the Canva AI name, and tools like Magic Write, Magic Resize and Magic Eraser are still listed by name.

Can I use Canva AI images commercially?

Canva says AI use is governed by its terms, Acceptable Use Policy and AI Product Terms. Read those before selling designs, and avoid generating anything that copies real brands, people or copyrighted characters.

Conclusion

Canva's AI features split into three groups: the conversational Canva AI assistant, generative tools that draw from a monthly allowance, and classic Magic tools for writing, resizing and editing. Free users get a taste through a small shared allowance. Regular creators will feel the limits fast and find Pro's resize, background removal and bigger AI allowance worth it.
