You can write a solid ebook with ChatGPT in a weekend, but only if you use it as a co-writer, not a vending machine. This guide shows how to write an ebook with ChatGPT the right way: choose a topic people want, build an outline, draft chapter by chapter, add what only you know, edit, then design it in Canva and publish or sell it.

The result is a short, useful ebook you can give away to grow an email list, sell as a digital product, or turn into a book. We'll also cover the rules that matter: Amazon KDP's AI disclosure and what US copyright law says about AI-written text.

What you need before you start

  • ChatGPT (the free version works for this workflow).
  • Canva for the design. Canva has a free plan with ebook templates.
  • A notes doc where you keep your outline, your own examples and the prompts that work.
  • 2 to 6 hours for a short ebook of roughly 5,000 to 10,000 words, spread over a few sessions.

Step 1: Pick a narrow topic and a clear reader

The most common mistake is a topic that's too broad. "Fitness" is a library. "A 15-minute morning workout plan for new dads" is an ebook.

A good ebook topic has three things:

  1. One reader: a specific person with a specific problem.
  2. One promise: the result they'll get by the last page.
  3. Your angle: something you know, have done, or can show.

To check demand, type your topic into Google or YouTube and look at the autocomplete suggestions. Those are real searches. You can also ask ChatGPT for help, then sanity-check its ideas against what people actually search for:

I want to write a short ebook for [reader] who struggles with [problem].
Suggest 10 specific ebook ideas. For each: a working title, the promise
in one sentence, and why this reader would pay attention to it.

Step 2: Build the outline with ChatGPT

A strong outline does most of the work. Give ChatGPT your reader, promise and angle, and ask for structure, not prose:

You are an experienced nonfiction editor.
Reader: [who]. Promise: [result]. My experience: [what you know or did].
Create an outline for a [number]-chapter ebook. For each chapter give:
the chapter title, the one question it answers, and 3-5 key points.
The book should move the reader from [starting point] to [result].

Then edit the outline yourself. Cut chapters that repeat, reorder for logic, and mark where your own stories, data or screenshots will go. If you want to get better results from every prompt, read our guide on how to write ChatGPT prompts.

Step 3: Draft one chapter at a time

Never ask for the whole book in one prompt. Long answers drift, repeat themselves and lose your voice. Work chapter by chapter, and paste the approved outline into each request so ChatGPT keeps the big picture:

Here is my approved outline: [paste outline].
Write Chapter [number]: [title]. Length: about [number] words.
Tone: [friendly, direct, no hype]. Use short paragraphs and one
practical example. End with a 3-item action checklist.
Here are my notes and stories to include: [paste notes].

Tip: feed it your own notes, examples and opinions. A chapter built from your material reads like you. A chapter built from nothing reads like everyone else's AI ebook.

Step 4: Add what only you can add

This step is what turns AI text into a book worth reading, and it also matters legally (see Step 7). Go through each chapter and add:

  • Real examples from your work or life.
  • Your opinion: what you'd do, what you'd skip, and why.
  • Specifics: steps, numbers you've verified, tools you've actually used.
  • Corrections: delete anything vague, generic or wrong.

Treat every fact, statistic and quote ChatGPT gives you as unverified until you check it against a reliable source. If you can't verify it, cut it.

Step 5: Edit for flow and clarity

Use ChatGPT as an editor, chapter by chapter:

Edit the chapter below for clarity and flow. Keep my voice and meaning.
Cut repetition, shorten long sentences, and flag any claim that needs a source.
Return the edited chapter, then a list of the flagged claims.
Chapter: """[paste]"""

Then read the whole thing out loud once. You'll catch repeated phrases and awkward transitions that no tool flags.

Step 6: Design your ebook in Canva

Canva's own ebook guide lays out the process: open Canva, type "Ebook" in the search bar, and choose a template. Templates include front, inside and back cover pages, and you decide which pages to keep, edit or delete.

A simple design workflow:

  1. Pick a template with a clean, readable layout. Body text matters more than decoration.
  2. Set your colors. Canva lets you enter hex codes, so you can match your brand palette.
  3. Paste in your text chapter by chapter. Keep body text large enough to read on a phone.
  4. Add visuals: simple icons, a chart you made, or photos you have the rights to use.
  5. Design the cover last, with a big, readable title. Canva also has a free book title generator if you're still stuck on the name.
  6. Download your file. Canva's pricing page lists PDF, JPG and PNG export.

Canva also has its own AI writer, Magic Write, which is powered by OpenAI and works inside Canva Docs and designs. It's handy for small edits, headings and summaries without switching tabs. On the free plan, Canva's pricing page lists up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses, so save those for the jobs that matter.

Step 7: Know the rules before you publish or sell

Amazon KDP's AI disclosure

If you publish on Amazon KDP, read its content guidelines first. KDP says it requires you to tell it about AI-generated content (text, images or translations) when you publish or republish a book. It defines AI-generated as content created by an AI tool, "even if you applied substantial edits afterwards". Content you wrote yourself and only edited or improved with AI counts as AI-assisted, which you don't have to disclose. Be honest in that form.

In January 2025 the US Copyright Office concluded that generative AI outputs can be protected by copyright only where a human author has determined sufficient expressive elements. Creative arrangement or modification of AI output can count; "the mere provision of prompts" does not. In practice, the more of the book that is truly yours (your writing, structure, examples and edits), the stronger your position. This isn't legal advice; if your book is a big investment, talk to a lawyer.

Step 8: Publish, sell or give it away

You have three simple options:

  • Lead magnet: give it away free in exchange for an email address. This is the fastest way to grow a list.
  • Sell it directly from your own page. Our tutorial on how to build a sales funnel with systeme.io shows how to set up a free opt-in page, an order form and automatic delivery with systeme.io.
  • Publish on Amazon KDP if the topic suits a book audience, following the disclosure rule above.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT write a whole ebook for me?

It can produce a full draft, but a book written entirely by AI with no human input tends to be generic, and it can be weaker legally and commercially. Use ChatGPT for outlining, drafting and editing, and add your own knowledge, examples and edits throughout.

How long should my first ebook be?

Short is fine. A focused ebook that solves one problem in roughly 5,000 to 10,000 words is easier to finish and easier to read than a long one. Length should follow the promise, not a target.

Selling it is generally fine, but follow each platform's rules. Amazon KDP requires you to disclose AI-generated content. Copyright protection depends on human authorship, according to the US Copyright Office.

Can I make an ebook with Canva for free?

Yes. Canva's free plan includes ebook templates, and its pricing page lists PDF, JPG and PNG export. Some premium templates and elements need a paid plan, and free accounts get a limited number of AI uses.

What's the best format for an ebook?

PDF is the simplest for direct sales and lead magnets because it looks the same everywhere. For Amazon KDP, check KDP's own formatting guidance for the format it accepts.

Conclusion

Writing an ebook with ChatGPT works when you stay in charge: pick a narrow topic, approve the outline, draft chapter by chapter, add your own experience, fact-check, then design it cleanly in Canva. Do that and you'll have a real asset you can sell, give away or publish.
