Freelance Price Calculator: Hourly Rate and Project Price

How much should you charge for a freelance service? Enter your target, the hours you can really bill and your costs. The calculator works out the minimum hourly rate and project price you need. It runs in your browser; nothing is sent or saved.

Billable hours per month-
What clients must pay you per month (before fees and tax)-
Minimum hourly rate to charge-
Minimum price for one project-
Projects needed per month at that price-

How the calculation works

  1. Billable hours = hours per week × billable share × working weeks per year ÷ 12.
  2. Money you need before tax = take-home income ÷ (1 − tax %) + monthly costs.
  3. What clients must pay = that amount ÷ (1 − platform fee %), because the platform takes its cut from the client's payment.
  4. Minimum hourly rate = what clients must pay ÷ billable hours. Project price = hourly rate × hours per project.

This is a simplified model: it treats tax as a flat share of what you keep after fees and costs, and real tax rules are usually more complex. Use it as a floor, not a final price. If the result is far above what competitors charge, you can work more billable hours, cut costs, choose a platform with lower fees, or offer a more specialised service that justifies a higher price.

Pricing tips for beginners

  • Price the project, not the hour. Clients compare results. Quote a fixed price per package once you know how long the work takes you.
  • Count revisions. Set how many revisions are included; extra rounds cost extra.
  • Check the real fee. Marketplaces change their fees. Read the current fee page of the platform you use before you set prices.
  • Raise prices as you get faster. AI tools can cut the hours a job takes. Your price should reflect the value delivered, not only the minutes spent.
