Three plan cards labeled Free, Go and Plus growing in size

Short answer: ChatGPT Free costs $0, Go costs $8 a month and Plus costs $20 a month on OpenAI's US pricing page. All three give you unlimited everyday text chats. Go mainly buys you more of the same tools (uploads, images, voice, memory). Plus is the first plan that unlocks OpenAI's stronger reasoning models and work features like Sites, deeper research and the Office extensions.

So the real question in ChatGPT Free vs Go vs Plus is not "which is best" but "which limit am I actually hitting?" This guide lays out what each plan includes, straight from OpenAI's pricing page and help center (checked October 27, 2026), and gives you a quick test to pick one without wasting money.

*"Unlimited" is OpenAI's word, and it is always "subject to abuse guardrails." Tools like uploads, images, voice and data analysis have their own separate limits on every plan.

All figures above come from the comparison table on ChatGPT's pricing page. Prices shown are the US prices; OpenAI says it bills in USD with local-currency billing in a limited set of countries, so your checkout price may differ.

What you get on ChatGPT Free

Free is genuinely usable. According to OpenAI's Free tier FAQ, free users can search the web, upload images and files, analyze data, use GPTs, create images and use Library with 500 MB of storage. Text chats are unlimited, while file uploads, image generation, voice and data analysis have separate caps. ChatGPT tells you when you hit one.

Where Free feels small:

  • Short memory per chat. The pricing page lists a 27K context window for the instant model and an input maximum of roughly 12 pages of text. Paste a long contract or a full ebook draft and it won't all fit.
  • Tool caps. Image creation, uploads and voice are "Limited," so heavy days end early.
  • Ads. OpenAI says ads may appear on the Free tier in certain countries.

Free is enough if you mostly ask questions, draft short emails, brainstorm or study, and you rarely upload big files. If you're new, start with our guide on how to write ChatGPT prompts. Better prompts often fix what people think is a plan problem.

What ChatGPT Go adds (and what it doesn't)

OpenAI's What is ChatGPT Go article describes Go as "a low-cost subscription plan" with everything in Free plus:

  • higher limits for eligible tools,
  • extended image generation,
  • extended file uploads,
  • extended advanced data analysis,
  • longer memory, with a larger context window.

The pricing table backs that up. Go doubles the instant-model context window to 54K, raises the input maximum to about 40 pages, unlocks scheduled tasks and voice with video, and moves memory, file uploads, data analysis and vision from "Limited" to "Yes."

What Go does not add matters just as much:

  • No stronger reasoning models. On the pricing table, GPT-6 Sol, GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol are marked "No" for both Free and Go and "Yes" for Plus.
  • Deep research stays "Limited."
  • Response times stay "Limited on bandwidth & availability," the same wording as Free.
  • Ads are possible. The pricing page says Go "may include ads," and the help article says OpenAI may start testing ads in Go.

Go is available in every country where ChatGPT is supported. It's billed monthly and you can cancel anytime.

Go is worth it if you keep hitting the Free caps on uploads, images or voice, or your long chats keep "forgetting" earlier context, but you don't need top-tier reasoning.

What ChatGPT Plus adds

OpenAI's What is ChatGPT Plus article lists the price as $20/month, billed monthly. It promises priority access during high-traffic periods, higher model limits, advanced reasoning access and faster responses. The pricing page lists Plus as "Everything in Go" plus:

  • advanced reasoning models with GPT-6,
  • expanded messages and uploads,
  • more complex and accurate image creation,
  • expanded deep research,
  • expanded memory and context,
  • expanded Codex usage and ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile,
  • early access to new features.

In the feature table, Plus is also the only one of the three with Sites, interactive tables and charts, Developer mode (beta), full Office/Sheets extensions and "Image generation with Thinking."

One thing to know before paying for GPTs: the pricing page lists "custom GPTs" under Plus, but OpenAI's Free tier FAQ says new GPT creation and publishing are not available on personal accounts, Plus included. You can keep using existing GPTs. So don't upgrade just to build one; check your own account first.

Plus still has limits too. OpenAI says Plus "may include usage limits such as message caps, especially during high demand."

Plus is worth it if you do multi-step work like coding, analysis, research reports or long documents and the reasoning models save you real time, or you rely on deep research or the Office extensions.

A 3-question test to pick your plan

Answer honestly, based on last week rather than a wish list:

  1. Did you hit a limit message more than twice? No → stay on Free.
  2. Was the limit on uploads, images, voice or chat length, not answer quality? Yes → try Go for a month.
  3. Were you unhappy with the quality of answers on hard tasks (math, code, analysis, long reports)? Yes → Plus is the plan that changes the model, not just the quota.

Two money-saving habits:

  • Upgrade the month you need it, not "just in case." Both Go and Plus bill monthly and can be canceled from Settings → Account.
  • Hit a limit right before a deadline? OpenAI's Free tier FAQ says your rate limits reset when you upgrade to Plus (or Pro or Business).
