If you're wondering how to use Notion AI for free, the honest answer is: you can try it for free, but full, ongoing Notion AI is part of Notion's paid Business plan. Notion's pricing page lists a "Trial of Notion AI" on the Free plan (and on Plus), and new teams with a work email can get a 30-day Business trial that includes Notion AI in full.

So the smart way to use Notion AI for free is to spend that trial on the jobs where it saves the most time, and to know exactly what you'd pay before the trial ends. This guide shows where to find Notion AI, what it can do, the free routes that really exist, and the prompts worth testing first.

What "free" means for Notion AI in 2026

Here's what Notion's own pricing page shows today (prices are per member per month, with yearly billing selected by default on the page; monthly billing costs more, and Notion says you "save up to 20% with yearly"):

Plan Price shown Notion AI
Free $0 Trial of Notion AI ("trial AI capabilities like generating docs, or autofilling databases")
Plus $10 per member/month Trial of Notion AI
Business $20 per member/month Notion AI included: Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search (beta)
Enterprise Custom pricing Everything in Business, plus zero data retention with Notion's AI providers

The takeaway: on Free and Plus you get a taste. The full AI toolkit, including the Notion Agent that "completes complex, multi-step tasks using context from Notion, your connected apps, and the web," sits on Business.

Watch out: Notion's newer Custom Agents are billed separately. The pricing page says they're "free to try, then $10 per 1,000 monthly Notion credits."

4 legit ways to use Notion AI for free

1. The built-in trial on the Free plan

Sign up for a free Notion account and you'll see AI options in your workspace. Notion describes this as a trial, so treat it as limited: test it on a real task instead of "hello" messages.

2. The 30-day Business plan trial

Notion's help center says new teams can get the Business plan free for 30 days, with "Notion AI, including AI Meeting Notes, Research Mode, Notion AI connectors, and more." The fine print matters:

  • It's for teams using a professional email domain. Notion says educational or personal domains (like a Gmail address) aren't eligible.
  • You need to start it from Notion's web or desktop app.
  • If you entered payment details to start the trial, Notion auto-renews the Business plan when the trial ends. Cancel before that if you don't want to pay. If you didn't enter payment details, you'll be asked to confirm the upgrade at the end.

3. The startup program

Notion's help center says eligible startups can get 1 to 6 months of the Business plan free, including monthly AI credits. You have to be a new, non-paying Notion customer and meet the program's requirements.

4. Students and teachers (with a catch)

Notion says the Plus plan is free for students and educators who sign up with a school email (with a 1-member limit). That gives you more guests, more version history and bigger uploads, but per the pricing page, Plus still shows a trial of Notion AI, not the full Business AI features.

How to open Notion AI

Notion's guide lists three ways in:

  1. The corner icon: select the circular icon with a face in the bottom-right corner of any Notion page.
  2. The sidebar: open Notion AI from the left sidebar under Search. It opens as a full page, which Notion suggests for brainstorming or first drafts.
  3. The keyboard shortcut: press Shift + Cmd + J on a Mac or Shift + Ctrl + J on Windows. Notion notes the desktop app has to be installed for this shortcut.

To find old chats, use View History in the three-dot menu of the Notion AI chat.

6 things to test during your free trial

A free trial runs out fast if you only play with it. These are the tasks where Notion AI tends to save real time, based on what Notion says it can do:

  1. Turn rough notes into a clean doc. Write bullet points, then ask: "Create a paragraph covering this content" or "Make this sound more professional."
  2. Edit text in place. Highlight text, choose Edit with AI, and ask it to fix grammar, shorten it or change the tone. Accept, discard or try again.
  3. Summarize long pages. Ask: "Create a list of the key takeaways" or "Summarize this in a table."
  4. Find patterns in feedback. Paste survey answers or support messages, highlight them and ask: "Identify the five most common themes."
  5. Read PDFs and images. Drag a PDF into the chat and ask for the main points and three next steps. Notion says it can also look at images, such as product packaging, and suggest improvements.
  6. Translate a page. Use the AI icon in the bottom-right corner and choose translate.

On Business, Notion AI can also search connected apps like Slack and Google Drive and answer from them, and it can work with spreadsheets, documents and slide files if you say "use a computer" in your prompt.

Prompts that get better results

Notion's own advice on prompting comes down to four habits: start with a clear goal, be specific, give context (audience, tone, format, length) and keep the language simple. A few ready-to-use prompts:

  • "Using the notes on this page, write a one-page client proposal for a website redesign. Friendly tone, 300 words, end with three next steps."
  • "Turn this meeting page into an action list with an owner and a due date for each item, as a table."
  • "Read this PDF and give me a five-bullet summary, then three questions I should ask the author."
  • "Rewrite this product description for Instagram. Under 60 words, two emoji max."

Free alternatives if you don't want to pay

If the trial ends and Business is more than you need, you can keep your notes in Notion's free plan and use a separate free AI tool for the writing and summarizing:

The trade-off: these tools don't see your Notion workspace, so you copy and paste instead of asking questions across all your pages.

Is Notion AI worth paying for?

It depends on how much of your work already lives in Notion. Business makes the most sense when:

  • your team keeps docs, projects and meeting notes in Notion and wastes time searching for answers;
  • you want AI meeting notes and follow-ups without a separate tool;
  • you'd use the Notion Agent for multi-step jobs across Notion and connected apps.

If you mostly need a writing assistant, a free chatbot plus Notion's free plan usually covers it. Whatever you pick, set a reminder a few days before any trial ends.

On privacy, Notion says it won't use your data to train its models unless you opt in, and that it has contracts preventing its AI subprocessors from training on customer data.
